There is currently no formal recognition for persons employed in the nest protection sector for ground nesting bird conservation in Ireland.
This course has been designed to implement and formalise a standard suite of competencies that will result in the recognition of personnel working in the industry. The formalisation of this suite of competencies will also create an attraction for younger people to enter the sector and become recognised as a professional operator to gain future employment.

The finer details

The course is broken into 3 units:
Unit 1: Proficiency with rifle and night shooting
Unit 2: Trapping and Fieldcraft

Unit 3: Proficiency in shotgun shooting

Each unit delivers on key competencies required in the sector. Units involve classroom learning with theory assessment, followed by practical tuition and assessment in a simulated environment relevant to each competency.

The instructor learner ratio will be 1:1 for assessments, however there will be an additional assistant present throughout the course to ensure safety compliance and provide support throughout.
