The minimum age to undertake this course is 16.
Hydraulic systems are widely used across industries, but they carry significant risks including hose failure, fluid injection injuries, burns, and uncontrolled release of stored energy. This course provides participants with the knowledge and skills to recognise these hazards, carry out safe inspections, and follow correct operating procedures.
The finer details
Through theory learning, participants will gain an understanding of hydraulic hose construction, failure modes, and inspection techniques, along with safe handling, storage, and isolation procedures. The training also covers relevant Northern Ireland legislation (HASAWA, COSHH, PUWER, PESR) to ensure compliance and promote a culture of safety in the workplace.
By the end of the course, learners will be able to confidently identify risks, apply preventative measures, and respond effectively to hydraulic incidents, helping to reduce downtime, prevent injuries, and improve workplace safety standards.
The course sessions include:
- Hose Types & Function
- Hose Construction & Components
- Hose identification & Inspection Techniques
- Hose Failures
- Dangers Of Pinhole Failures
- Locating Pinhole Failures
- Dangers of hydraulic Oil Injections
- What to do if Hydraulic Oil Injection Occurs
- Dangers Of Total Hose Failure
- Dangers of incorrect Hose Assembly
- Safe Operating Procedures
- Correct Routing & Protection Of Hoses
- Correct Storage Of Hoses
- Inspecting hoses for signs of wear/degradation
- Stored energy hazards (pressure within a system) & de-pressurisation
- Suspended loads (elevated loads supported only by hydraulics) and how to safety support them
- Temperature of hydraulic fluid
- Hydraulic fluid ignition risks
- Job preparation – Managing suspended loads, de-pressurising a system, isolating a system (using lock out/tag out kits)
