Session 1: Introduction to Workplace Safety
- Overview of health and safety in the workplace
- Employer and employee responsibilities
- Key legislation:- Health and Safety at Work Act 1974- PUWER 1998- COSHH 2003
Session 2: Risk Assessment and Management
- Understanding hazards and risks
- Steps in conducting a risk assessment
- The hierarchy of controls:- Eliminate, substitute, engineer, administrate, and PPE
- Recording, reviewing, and updating risk assessments
- Definition and importance of near-miss reporting
- Procedures for reporting and investigating incidents
- Understanding RIDDOR and legal reporting requirements
Session 3: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Importance of PPE and legal obligations
- Types of PPE for workshop tasks
- Proper usage, maintenance, and consequences of non-compliance
Session 4: Machinery-Specific Safety
- Safe operation, hazards, and maintenance for:
- LOTOTO (Lockout/Tagout) procedures.
- Identifying and mitigating:

What will be covered?
By the end of this course you will:
- Understand the importance of safety in the workplace, as well as the responsibilities of both employers and employees.
- Be aware of the different types of PPE, their proper uses and the risks of non-compliance.
- Understand the steps to conduct a risk assessment (including identifying hazards, evaluating and controlling risks, recording findings ad reviewing/updating assessments).
- Understand the hazards, safe use and maintenance of specific equipment including: - Drills (Hand, Magnetic, Pillar)- Combination Metal Working Machine- Horizontal Band Saw- Abrasive Wheels- Impact Guns- Compressed air- Tube bending press
- Understand safety procedures including good housekeeping and organisation, accident and near-miss reporting, COSHH compliance and LOTOTO procedures.
- Understand specific precautions including:- Noise, vibration and dust hazards- Fire risks and thermal runaway in lithium batteries- Electrocution and manual handling
