The minimum age to undertake this course is 16.
This course includes the features, safety checks and appropriate maintenance of the electric chainsaw, PPE, site safety, cutting material accurately and safe handling and stacking of the material.

- Safety precautions & appropriate PPE features of the chainsaw
- Component parts of the chain, selecting the chain, sharpening the chain, symptoms of poor cutting performance
- Maintenance of the guide bar, maintenance of the chain brake, sprocket maintenance, re-assemblance of the chain, bar & side plate
- Clean power unit & covers & inspect for damage, checking for condition & operational safety
- Actions to take if safety checks indicate incorrect saw
- Identify hazards & comply with control procedures
- Emergency planning & need for effective communication
- Pollution & environmental damage
- Check chainsaw prior to operation, demonstrate safety considerations required during cutting of materials
- Cross cut material to given specification, demonstrate knowledge of risks associated with using long chainsaw bars
- Demonstrate knowledge of the procedure for removing a trapped saw
- Demonstrate knowledge of safe lifting & handling practices.

What will be covered?
By the end of the course, the learner will be able to:
- Organise site safety & state the precautions required.
- State & Identify PPE required, report on its condition and locate the standard marks
- State & identify the H&S features on the chainsaw
- Identify faults & defects on the chainsaw & decide if this requires service engineer’s attention or can be remedied by the operator
- Select correct maintenance tools & report on their condition
- Correctly carry out routine chainsaw maintenance in accordance with Instruction/workbooks
- Chain lubrication
- Carry out pre-cutting tests & state process if chainsaw fails the tests
- State possible hazards/risks during maintenance or operation tasks
- Cross cut material accurately
- Handle & stack material in a safe manner.
